Q: Schizophrenia treatment?
I am from Pune. Here a psychometric testing has diagnosed me with schizophrenia and thought disorder and accordinly a psychiatrist has given me medicines. But before taking medicines a want to take a second opinion. Can anybody refer me the best hospitals in India from where I can get the second opinion. It is very important as I do not want to take the wrong medicines.
A: The key to staying out of an institution when you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia is to take your medication as prescribed religiously.
Q: Do people have different personalities after schizophrenia treatment ?
I believe I have undifferentiated schizophrenia. I am seeking help and I want to know how much will my personality change.
I mean is there a significant effect on the way in which they interact with other people and how others communicate. Are they better at socializing and expressing themselves.
A: First of all have you been properly diagnosed or is it just a self diagnosis ? Go to a properly trained mental health Doctor and talk to them . They will be able to advise you on treatments and meds that are individually diagnosed for you. If you have schizophrenia , your personality will not change but you will be a healthier happier version of you . But get diagnosed..Don’t self diagnose by listening to others or searching on Internet. that can be dangerous. that’s why they have Dr’s who go to school and are trained to do this Good Luck………………KB
Q: What is the difference between the treatment of schizophrenia in 1960-1970 and today?
I watched “A Beautiful Mind” and I’d like to know how treatment of schizophrenia has changed over time.
A: The treatment with schizophrenia as with all mental illnesses has changed drastically over the years. They have more medications to treat mental illnesses today and quite effectively I might add. The problem is getting on the right mix of meds for U because everyone is different and you need to trial and error to get just the right mix.
There are a plethora of medications today that were not available back in the 1960s. Mental illness is a chemical imbalance in the brain and while it is not cureable, it is treatable.
Hope I answered your question.
Q: In the 1950s what was the main treatment used for schizophrenia worldwide?
I’m doing a seminar on the differences on the treatment of Schizophrenia comparing it from now in 2007 and in the 1950s. Also wanting to know about how those suffering from schizophrenia were treated by others as well as medically.
And I’m in high school, and am actually doing a lot of other research thank you very much. I’m just using this to see if anyone has any other information that I don’t know about. People annoy me when they think they are above others.
Thanks to those with the fantastic Help!
A: i would say that in north america , at least the main treatment for schizophrenia, was institutionilaztion, and medications, namely thorazines, and haldol. chloropromazine was a widely used drug, then stelezine. these drugs worked not too bad, but were not effective for everyone. the side effects were not pleasant and a lot of people would have to take medication, to help ease the side effects. i worked in a large psychiatric hospital in the middle 60’s, in canada. in the 50’s, there other than medication, was other treatments were used. hospitals tried a treatment known as continuous water treatment, were patients were put in a bathtub, similar to a whirlpool, and treated with warm water to help settle them down, it did not work. also, insulin shock therapy was used, but shortly discontinued, as it was dangerous and did not work. on occasion, but not often there were some labotomies perfermed , but was abandoned in the early 1950’s. ect was also used, but more for people with severe agitation, and depression. and actually, although a lot of peope think this was barabaric, it actually worked, and i have seen it work. if you had schizophrenia, in the 50’s, you had a better chance of ending up in a psychiatric hospital, as oposed to returning home.. to day there are many people living with schizophrenia, that are functiong well in the community. the difference between then and now, is that the medications are more effective, less side effects and longer acting, such as injectibale medications. the attitude is much better and there is more support, such as community support groups, that offer housing, followup and support once a person leaves hospital. during my past 31 years working in in psychiatric hospital, and in the community with people with schizophrenia, i have seen other people try ‘treatment’, on these people. i have seen people take out their loved ones out of hospital, taken them off their medications, tried, religious support, herbal therapy, love, but all got sick again once they got off their medications. today a person can live reasonably sypmtom free, as opposed to the 50’s hope this helps my spell check does not seem to work, so sorry if there are spelling errors.
Q: any new develpoments on schizophrenia treatment ?
My 26 year old son has schizophrenia, and was diagnoised at the age of 19. since then he has been on many medications. some were too mild, others worked for a while , then were not as effective, anyone know of new treatment that we may try ? we have tried risperadal, zyprexia, geaodn, etc. he now gets a shot with prolixin, and takes by mouth, cloziril.
it is somewhat effective, but leaves him too doped up to funtion.
I have heard that abilify is not sedating and does not add weight gain.
my questions is does anyone know of any other treatment that may be new , or of a good reference site for new information ?
A: Prolixin and clozaril are pretty old school treatments, it is no wonder that you are seeing significant side effects.
Have you yet tried Seroquel, it is pretty sedating but other than that has very mild side effects (given the other medications), I believe Abilify is even less sedating than the Seroquel but have no experience with it yet.
Q: The most successful Schizophrenia treatment?
What is the most successful treatment for Schizophrenia thus far? I know it’s not a lobotomy.
A: Without getting into a debate on the best type, in general the most successful treatment for schizophrenia is anti-psychotic medicines. There are atypical (most recently developed in 90’s) and the original ones (developed in 50’s). Different people respond differently to the various types of anti-psychotics and they must work closely with a doctor to find the right medication.
Even better for some people is a combination of medicinal treatment (anti-psychotics) and psychotherapy. In psychotherapy, schizophrenics can learn how to cope with their symptoms better. They can learn how to ignore voices, rationalize delusions, and learn techniques to manage the negative symptoms. Psychotherapy also helps schizophrenics deal with the day to day struggles of the illness such as how it manifests in the workplace, at school, or with family.
It is important to remember that different treatments work differently for various people. No one responds the same to one medication. For some, psychotherapy is completely useless. The key is finding a doctor who is willing to try many options to learn what will work best for the individual.
Q: How to deal with a person taking treatment for schizophrenia and has become violent?
This person is being treated for more than five years and now has become violent beating up the maid etc How to deal with the sitution?
A: Perhaps he/she needs to be hospitalized. The medication is not working and the doctors need to get the person balanced again before he/she can return to the world. Good luck.
Q: What was the old treatment for schizophrenia called?
The old one where they used to poke a stick in past your eye.
A: lobotomy
Q: What form of narcotics can be used in the treatment of schizophrenia?
A friend of mine was court ordered to take a drug. The court did not tell her what the drug ws but they told her that if she didn’t take it that she would go to jail. She has very bad effects coming from this drug and we really need to learn what this drug is. If you need more information please e-mail me. I am very concerned for her well being.
My friend was placed on a drug by the court and we do not know what is is please help us. She is reacting very badly.
A: Check for a gluten sensitivity. There is a huge link between gluten and schizophrenia. There is a theory that some people suffer from leaky gut syndrome, the wheat goes through the gut and straight to the brain, acting as a drug, which can make you feel ‘crazy’ with thoughts. Keep a food diary and note what foods trigger the onset of ‘fearful thoughts’ – this could be anything from wheat, dairy, eggs or oranges. www.foodforthebrain.org is a charity and it has a free questionnaire you can fill out in order to get feedback on what you might be lacking in your diet or read Patrick Holford’s “Optimum Nutrition for the mind”
If you do decide to try a gluten-free diet for two weeks, it is important to cut it out 100% and eat nutritious food. The gluten doctors blog have a lot of helpful advice and you can email them and ask questions.
Here is an article and the link between schizophrenia and nutrition.

Q: do people with schizophrenia recover through long term treatment?
how long do people with schizophrenia take to recover through long term treatment?
A: recover? I do not think they get cured, but treatment can change things for them a great deal. They can improve, but they will forever be schizophrenic as far as I know
Q: Making a poster about schizophrenia awareness and treatment?
Does anyone have any imaginative ideas to make it stand out, or a bit different?
A: Larry has it all wrong! Schizophrenia has nothing to do with a “split personality” or “multiple personalities”. Those concepts are from the dark ages of psychiatry and were abandoned decades ago.
Show a very sad person with question marks over her head and her hand to her forehead in consternation being ministered to with compassionate touching by concerned family members both young and adult This exemplifies the confusion that is so characteristic of these disorders and the consternation it engenders in others.
Good luck with your poster, good mental health, peace and Love!.

A: Curing Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia like any illness is due to an homeostatic imbalance, and can be considered on the far right on the bipolar-Schizo-affective disorder-schizophrenia spectrum.
The amount of neurotoxins {aspartame}, cancer causing chemicals{sacharin, fluoride} and chemicals that are more lethal that any street drugs are unfortunetly given to the mentally ill, as a former bipolar, I found the cure using alternative medicine alone, the following worked for me, and God-willing will work for you, I have modified it to suit your specific condition, by re-reading the books stated, let’s begin:
‘They {the medical establishment} hate that word {cure}, like the devil hates holy water’
Dr. Royal Raymond Rife

Intestinal Dysbiosis/Candida Overgrowth
‘All diseases begin in the gut’ Hippocrates 460-370BC
Mental illness starts not in the Brain but the Gut. Do you have digestive problems like colic, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea, constipation, and malnourishment {are you very skinny and find it difficult to put on weight?}, and do you have a white/yellow-coating on your tongue? Do you suffer from frequent headaches, mood swings, depression, fatigue, and other symptoms related to ‘candida overgrowth?’
Read ‘Gut And Psychology Syndrome’ By. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, NMedSci{neurology}, MMedSci{nutrition}
This doctor, who has a clinic in Cambridge for treating mental illnesses like Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, Depression, Schizophrenia, and Bipolar Disorder. Her son suffered from Autism, she found the cure and the root cause, and believes that all mental illness can be cured, that underlying these seemingly diverse labels, is a unified theory behind all mental illness, manifesting differently due to the type of psychological trauma, childhood experiences, personality and even influenced by activated genes. Although mental illness is not genetic, as you may have been told…
I found that my bipolar disorder was caused or worsened by Candida overgrowth or Candida Related Complex. You should consult a Naturopathic Doctor {not a homeopath, they’re different}, a Nutritionist that has treated Schizophrenia before, and an orthomolecular medicine doctor.
Candida thrive on sugar, so Cut out all sugar, unstable/imbalanced blood sugar levels can cause depression and hyperactivity, replace table sugar with Xylitol {much more healthier and beneficial and tastes the same in the same portions! you wont notice too much of a difference, don’t go near NutraSweet or Aspartame, monosodium glutamate MSG – avoid like the plague}. Cut out stimulants like caffeine/coffee, and soda soft drinks.
S. Boulardii is a good probiotic that flushes out candida from the body. Look into Kefir Making, this home-made free probiotic drink in itself will bring you much improvement in your mental health and well being, all you need is Kefir Grains to get started, google ‘Kefir Making’ and look at Doms Kefir Making website, it tells you everything you want/need to know.

Fasting & Detoxification
Do a detox fast a 3-day apple fast, only red/golden delicious apples, and fresh water, along with coffee enema’s, this is all stated in ‘Cure your acne in 3 days’ but it works great for mental illness, many patients suffering from mental illness have bad skin according to one conventional website i was reading. Which laughingly went on to say this was also ‘genetic’. This fast will help rid your body of the accumulated toxins affecting your brain, and kill a lot of Candida Yeast.
See the outlined 3-day fast here, although for acne, it will work for bipolar disorder also:

Recent studies have shown that Prozac {a popular antidepressant} has anti-fungal/candida properties, and inhibits its growth, this is due to Serotonin. Further, Sodium Valporate {used as a mood stabiliser} has been shown to stop the growth of harmful pathogenic microorganisms/worms in the gut. This is very interesting findings, as it supports that mental illness is due to problems in the gut or intestinal dysbiosis.
Go on the anti-candida diet. Source: ‘The Yeast Connection’ Book
Drink Alkali water, add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to every litre of purified water you drink, this will prevent disease and reduce the growth of Candida. Source: Mr X Acne e-book
Look also into Gerson Therapy/Juicing, this has cured many diseases, not just cancer, it will cure mental illness. But start this after you have rid yourself of candida.

Correcting Nutritional Deficiencies
-Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 3 supplements or Carlson’s Brand 2-3g per day has been shown in scientific studies to reduce mental illness significantly. Strictly, the brands mentioned as they are pure pharmaceutical grade, and are used in clinical trials, plus the Carlson’s Brand has added fat-soluble vitamins.
Google it to see the research with omega 3 and its remarkable effects on mental illness, yet more evidence that mental illness is due to nutritional deficiencies, which has been aggravated by Candida overgrowth/Intestinal Dysbiosis.
-EM Power Plus + by TrueHope, has been shown to be very effective, look at the testimonies on mcmillans BiPolar website. Personally i have not used this, as my current nutrition programs works great.
-A multivitamin/ mineral supplement in a bioavailable form, E.g . Higher Nature brand
SAMe – 400mg per day, this will boost your energy levels. And has been called the ‘instant antidepressant’, please have the histamine blood test done with the help of a mental-health orientated nutritionist, before taking this. If you are high-histamine {google it}, you will need to take methionine 1000-2000mg per day.

Scientific Blood/Urine tests
The best way to pinpoint the exact imbalance, or imbalances, as mental illness is mot likely a myriad of conditions manifesting simultaneously, it is best to get blood tests to find out what the problem is:
Get blood tests, to test for:
- Histamine {high histamine is the cause of many Schizophrenia type symptoms, highly recommend this test}
- Pyroluria, http://www.kryptopyrrole.com/
- Allergies, Allergies to certain foods can cause psychological problmes/mental instability, the most common offenders are Milk, Gluten, Egg, Wheat in that order, try eliminating each one for atleast 72hours and see how you feel.
- Candida Comprehensive Stool test, or D-Mannitol Urine Test {best and most accurate, bu hard to find a lab/scientist that does this, as its new}
-Nutritional deficiencies/Nutritional profile
- Adrenal exhaustion,
- Homocysteine,
- Thyroid disorders, including Wilson’s Thyroid disorder, although this involves monitoring youe body temperature immediately on waking, I think it should be above 97.5F, I am not sure, check this first/research.
- Heavy metal toxicity, Ever heard some on say his as ‘Mad as a Shoe Maker’, well shoe makers used to use harmful chemicals like mercury, lead which made them go mad. Heavy metals are in civil water supplies, and even bottled water, as well as from metal pans/cookware, this can accumulate in the body and cause mental illness, or even Alzheimer’s disease.
Your nutritionist can arrange these test through a local lab, or you could open the yellow pages, get phoning to local naturopaths/nutritionist and finding a local lab and/or their assistance…Biolab in London does this.

The Cure for Mental illness was Found Decades Ago!!!
Read Carl Pfeiffer’s PhD book ‘Nutrition and Mental Illness’, he was a pioneer with orthomolecular medicine and cured many people of Schizophrenia, some say 5000 {Patrick Holford}.
The Brain Bio Centre in London continues his work, as does the one in Princeton US, although it is very expensive. And in my opinion you can recover and save the money if you read and search for the knowledge, although I know how difficult that can be.
Dr. Carl Pfieffer MD PhD cured bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, OCD and many other mental illnesses, 30 years ago, he used mega doses of vitamins/mineral to cure the patient, he claimed Schizophrenics had a genetic predisposition to be dificient of niacin. And Bipolars/Schizophrenics were High Histamine, which can be reduced by taking Vitamin C 1000 – 2000mg as Magnesium Ascorbate and and L-Methionine amino acid supplement.
Exercise as much as you can! especially in the morning, 30mins per day minimum, or Yoga, swimming, meditation, do something relaxing.
Take Coenzyme Q10 30mg to boost energy levels, when you feel tired, also SAMe.

Why does my Doctor/Psychiatrist not know this?
Conventional medicine is crap at treating mental illness, alternative medicine has the answers. Just try it out first, regardless of what your Dr. will tell you. Just try it.
Psychiatrists make a lot of money from chronic life long mental illnesses, which they claim is genetic and incurable, which is a load of BS. Further drug companies make a lot of money from you; since most mental illness cannot be cured {according to the Doctors, since they are merely repeating what they learnt at med school} you have to stay on medication for a life-time {as maintenance}
Psychiatrists examine mental illness from various angles, although they are helpful, they do not address
Q: what kind of treatment is used to cure Paranoid Schizophrenia?
I think i may have it i have been looking it up on the internet , i hear and imagine things happening all time and all the time moody and think everyone is out to get me, is there any treatment for this?
A: First of all, please don’t self-diagnose yourself…especially with this terrible disease!
First of all, there is no CURE. Paranoid schizophrenia is only maintained via medication and psycho therapy. It is a lifelong illness marked by delusions and fantasy, terrible hallucinations and fear.
If you are moody and you think that everyone is out to get you, it could be simple depression. Please get to your family doctor and write down all your symptoms and discuss them with him. IF you have simple depression, short term medication could give you the relief you need.
I wish you all the best.
